"...a fine new CD, 'How It Is', slays just about any big company
songster product that has been coughed up over the past 12 months."

Kym Tuvim With her second release ‘On The Mend’, Kym proves she’s been paying attention all along, and taking notes. A subtle observer of inequities and hidden blessings, she’s come into her own and isn’t afraid of getting into trouble anymore. 'On The Mend’ was produced with The A-Team (aka Evan Brubaker and Troy Glessner) and features Julie Wolf (Ani Difranco) on hammond and keys, Dan Tyack (Asleep At The Wheel) on pedal steel, dobro and lap steel, Phil Peterson on cello, Laura Veirs on banjo, Joel Litwin (Erin Corday) on percussion, Holly Figueroa (Indiegrrl Founder) singing backup, and soon to be known Bendickson brothers, Jason & Sean respectively, on bass and drums. Recorded during the summer of 2002, ‘On The Mend’ is the long awaited follow up to Kym’s 1998 self-titled debut, selected as a Top-12 Independent Release by Performing Songwriter Magazine. ‘On The Mend’ dives headlong into matters of the heart with clarity, honesty and hope carried by spare, yet sonically full arrangements that take the music through these emotional territories without getting heavy-handed. Delivered with her huge voice and a groove so deep you could fall in, ‘On The Mend’ is about as authentic and soulful as it gets.

Skip Peri The secret is out. Skip Peri's debut release, "Naked," reveals a powerful new voice. Both compellingly original and achingly familiar, Peri’s tunes draw upon the familiar themes of love and loss but are infused with an energy and intensity that sets them apart. His voice resonates with a power and grace that belies an artist of many more years. With a backdrop of dynamic rhythm guitar, he shifts effortlessly from a deep and brooding register to a vulnerable falsetto. Recorded on an off-the-shelf PC in a spare bedroom, "Naked" surely doesn't suffer from it's humble roots. "Naked" is the offspring of the music industry’s new breed; a modest, accessible pop record made for peanuts. Peri surrounded himself with people he trusted and proceeded to get the sounds he heard in his head onto disc. He tapped first-time producer Jonathan Kingham to produce and The A-Team (Evan Brubaker & Troy Glessner) to mix. The result is a recording that stays true to Peri's vision and can play ball with any Million-Dollar-A&R Fest put out by the Majors.

Sean Campbell
Blame it on the family.... Twenty-five year old Sean Campbell credits
his family for his musical talents. His great grandfather was a ragtime
musician in Kansas City and was responsible for a song called "Corn
Shucks Rag", and Sean's mother, a violinist, started Sean on piano when
he was 11, then on to violin, trumpet, guitar, and more. "Sean Campbell has one of the most amazing voices I've heard. Ever. He knocks me over with a feather." - Kym Tuvim
Sean is currently recording his debut "piano-rock" CD in Spectre Studios with Evan as producer, engineer and even co-writer of a few tracks. Sean's full band, Weather, will be playing at Fenders on May 21st - but until then you'll need to catch him solo (or sometimes playing with other great musicians around town). Check the Cake website for current info.

Special guest of Cake Records Into a Boston singer/songwriter scene, seemingly saturated with independent artists bearing guitar strap calluses, Brian wandered north from his hometown of Atlanta, GA, where he had shared stages with future well-knowns such as Shawn Mullins, Josh Joplin, India Arie and Angie Aparo. He quickly rose to the top, albeit in his own gracious, accommodating, anything-but-arrogant manner. After only a handful of months in beantown (unbeknownst to Brian) you could hear the buzz for an hour before his twinkle-eyed grin would appear on the horizon. But rather than scramble for the spotlight, Brian made it his mission to bolster the cornucopia of talent in which he found himself engulfed. He helped initiate "indie-guys night"—with a hat tipped to its indie-grrl predecessors—in conjunction with Club Passim and other well-known Boston-area clubs. He joined numerous song-circles and performed in the round with local songwriters for an array of worthy causes. Music, for Brian, is culture, community, passion—not competition...that is reserved for the basketball court.
