My three-year-old daughter called me on my cell phone I travel a fair amount for business reasons. It's really never very glamorous. Flights delayed. Drunk people waking me up at all hours as they come up to their hotel rooms from a wedding in the ballroom downstairs. Airport. Rental car. Hotel. Seminar. Rental car. Airport. Lots of fast food. It's always painful being away from my family. But most of the time, it still feels like I'm accomplishing something. I'm pretty sure that I'm helping people. At least they tell me that I am. On this particular trip, I went to Seattle and Tacoma, Washington to do a couple of TAXI seminars. But something happened on this trip that made being away from my family a little less a of a bummer. I had the chance to spend some "quality" time with a group of musicians in Tacoma. They hung out with me before and after my seminar. Being with them reminded me why our job at TAXI is so important. I could see the desire in all their eyes. These people LOVE to make music. They don't have a choice. The desire never leaves them. I had that same burning desire from the time I was a kid. I HAD to be in the music business. There wasn't any other real possibility for me. I'm lucky. I got my break when I was nineteen. Mack Emmerman hired me as an intern at Criteria Studios in Miami. I told him that I'd never, ever forget the opportunity he was giving me, and that I'd always do what I could to "pay it forward." Over the years, I trained a lot of assistant engineers. Since 1992, I've taught thousands of artists and writers how to better navigate the music business. The only thing that kept me from hopping back on a plane the other night and flying home to my family was that group of people in Tacoma. They reminded me of my promise to my old boss and my mission. My kids? Well, I WAS home 341 nights last year. They'll survive. Maybe they'll even learn a lesson from their old man. It's a better life when you have the privilege of doing what you love to earn a living. Thanks to the musician community in Tacoma for reminding me. Talk to you soon, Michael |
