Doug Mackey was born in TACOMA, WA and presently resides in TACOMA, WA.

In elementary school Doug always sang and liked to talk in funny voices, scored high on tests, but received Ns (not acceptables) in "self control".

In 1973, Doug's dad Steve bought "The Beatles 1962-1966"--the RED album.

At Truman Junior High Doug sang in Neil Smith's vocal ensemble group (which placed first in a regional competition), continued talking in funny voices and scored high on tests.  He also met uberfreund Craig Awmiller.

By the 10th grade everything had gone to hell.  Doug had discovered alcohol and The Who, and the funny voices weren't always funny anymore.  He still scored high on tests, though.

Keith Moon.

Doug bought a shitty drum set and joined a band of which he is still proud:  "Natural Causes", which morphed into something ghastly called "Cause and Effect" not long after Doug entered The Evergreen State College (where there are no tests) to study theater and film.  During this period Doug decided it'd be best if he'd deconstruct his ego.  (The Good Work continues even today.)  He also started messing with a Fender Mustang.

After college Doug discovered other things:  conscious disassociation, crippling disappointment fueled by genuine inspiration and consuming ambition, and employment as the Resident Sound Designer at the Tacoma Actor's Guild, a card-carrying actor, a director, a teacher, a fish-pitcher, and as an improvisational comedian at Walt Disney World, among other stints.

While in the Sunshine State Doug and three good friends formed "Orange", the first band in which he played guitar.  Named for a song co-written by Doug and band mate David Rosenberg (who, it should be noted, wrote the VAST majority of the lyrics), "Orange" was for Doug the first realization of his developing desire to sing and accompany himself on guitar, playing the songs he had been writing.

Back in TACOMA, WA, with his menagerie of beloved animal companions—including official band canine, BOCA--Doug performs theme weddings (incredibly he’s an ordained minister), emcees events, hosts The Gig Club’s music business education program, writes a column for the Weekly Volcano, writes feature film scripts, does voice-overs, runs sound at Jazzbones, handles sensitive materials, and plays music with MOON YARD

Nowadays, Doug is a better singer, a marginally better guitar player, and a happy camper due in large part to his partner/friend ship with the extraordinary individuals he is honored to play with in MOON YARD.

He still talks in funny voices and has nightmares about being back in school taking tests.
