Amendment 1 (For the Election of
Sheriff) which will appear on the November 7th General Ballot to allow citizens of unincorporated
Pierce County the
opportunity to vote on changing the Sheriffs position from appointed to elected.

SHERIFF REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS
RCW 36.28.025
Qualifications.
A person who files a declaration of candidacy for the office
of sheriff after September 1, 1979, shall have, within
twelve months of assuming office, a certificate of
completion of a basic law enforcement training program which
complies with standards adopted by the criminal justice
training commission pursuant to RCW
43.101.080
and *43.101.160.
This requirement does not apply to
persons holding the office of sheriff in any county on
September 1, 1979.

Sheriff.
A.
Education.
Minimum of bachelor's degree in criminal justice,
forensic science or a related field. Master's degree or equivalent expertise in one of these fields
preferred.
B. Experience.
1. Graduate of a law enforcement academy.
2. Experience in the confinement of prisoners. Experience in
serving court
orders and executing writs.
3. Ability to coordinate search and rescue operations.
4. Sufficient knowledge of and experience in enforcement of water
safety laws.
5. Ability to plan for and organize a response to natural
disasters such as
floods, earthquakes, fires and storms.
6. Ability to work with other public officials and citizens in the
development and
the implementation of comprehensive community
safety programs.
7. The County Sheriff must meet the requirements imposed by RCW
Chapter
36.28, County Sheriff.
